Daegu Day Trip
— a half-day food & walking route, Banwoldang to Seomun Market
The classic downtown Daegu walk: a 360-year-old herbal medicine alley, the Modern Culture Alley, and a huge traditional market — planned around one thing most guides skip: where to eat. Written by a restaurant that simmers soup in the herbal alley every day.

Why this route
Search "things to do in Daegu" and the Modern Culture Alley walk always comes up — Cheongna Hill, Gyesan Cathedral and Yangnyeongsi strung into one old-town stroll. What most itineraries leave out is the important part: what to eat along the way. This guide flips that, and plans the walk around the food.
We also walk the official route in reverse: start at Banwoldang Station (the easiest place to reach), have lunch in the herbal alley, wander the old lanes, and finish with street food at Seomun Market.

Stop by stop
Banwoldang Station — start
The downtown junction of Daegu Metro Lines 1 and 2. Coming by KTX, transfer at Dongdaegu Station to Line 1 — about 15 minutes. Leave by the exit for "The Hyundai Daegu" and walk north along the lane beside the department store, and you will start to smell the medicinal herbs.
About 6 minutes on foot from The Hyundai Daegu to the next stop (about 7 minutes from Banwoldang Station Exit 15)
Yangnyeongsi herbal alley — lunch in a 360-year-old market
This herbal market opened in the 1650s and still trades today. The air literally smells different as you pass the herb shops; the free Daegu Yangnyeongsi Museum of Oriental Medicine mid-alley is worth 20–30 minutes.
Lunch is easiest right here in the alley. Cheongwoo Haejang simmers beef and beef bones all day for a clear broth — the signatures are galbitang (beef short-rib soup) and spicy braised beef ribs, one of Daegu's famous "10 flavors". After days of spicy travel food, a clear beef soup is a welcome reset, and it works well for families. Our English, Japanese and Chinese menus are on this website — show the menu page on your phone to order.
About 8 minutes on foot to the next stop
Jin Alley — a cup of ssanghwa tea
Said to be the oldest lane in Daegu. Inside is Mido Dabang, a retro tearoom famous across Korea; the signature is ssanghwa herbal tea served with an egg yolk. Perfect timing right after lunch.
About 13 minutes on foot to the next stop
Gyesan Cathedral & the Yi Sang-hwa House
Daegu's first Gothic cathedral, completed in 1902, stands next to the preserved house of poet Yi Sang-hwa. The most photogenic stretch of the whole walk.
About 8 minutes on foot to the next stop
Cheongna Hill & the 3·1 Movement stairs
"The hill of green ivy." The 90 steps that students secretly climbed during the 1919 independence movement are still here, along with century-old missionary houses. This is where the official route starts — we save it for last.
About 15 minutes on foot to Seomun Market (or one stop by bus)
Seomun Market — finish with street food
The largest traditional market in southeastern Korea. Arriving already fed is actually ideal — everything here is snack-sized. Must-tries: nappjak-mandu (flat dumplings, born in Daegu), hand-cut noodles in Kalguksu Alley, seed hotteok pancakes, and the bibimbap stalls. On some evenings the night market opens with even more.
