Ttaro Gukbap & Beef Soup in Daegu
— about 7 minutes from Banwoldang Station
Looking for where to eat ttaro gukbap — Daegu's signature spicy beef soup and one of the city's official 10 delicacies — plus galbitang and oxtail, with an English menu? Cheongwoo Haejang is a beef-soup house inside the 360-year-old Yangnyeongsi herbal medicine alley, about a 7-minute walk from Banwoldang Station (Exit 15) and 6 minutes from The Hyundai Daegu.

What is ttaro gukbap, and why Daegu?
Ttaro gukbap (따로국밥) literally means "rice and soup, separately." Its lineage goes back to Daegu tangban: in 1929 the magazine Byeolgeongon ran a piece titled “Daegu’s pride, Daegu tangban” about this red beef soup — beef simmered for hours with heaps of green onion and chili oil — already famous enough that Seoul restaurants hung “Daegu-tang” signs. After 1945 the rice began to be served in its own bowl, and the dish took the name ttaro gukbap. Daegu's city government lists it among the Daegu 10-mi, the ten dishes that define the city's food — alongside jjim-galbi (braised ribs) and mungtigi (raw beef).
Our version is the Daegu spicy beef soup on the menu: beef and beef bones simmered from morning to evening, gently spicy rather than punishing, served with rice on the side the Daegu way. If you want to taste the one dish that is truly Daegu, this is it.
Not a fan of spice? The same broth, without chili
Everything here starts from one pot: beef and beef bones simmered all day into a clear, deep stock. That means the non-spicy dishes are just as good — and they are what most families and older guests order.
